Using the cover lessons

These notes provide a set of ready-made instructions for use in cover lessons, together with a list of the resources needed. The cover lessons for each Unit are in a separate Word document, so that you can amend them to suit the needs of your department.

Each topic has three suggested 'routes' depending on the ability level of the group. Just select the appropriate route, and fill in the number of books/worksheets needed for the class. We have assumed that lessons are around an hour long; we have tried to provide more than enough work for each lesson, so a class will probably not get through all the activities listed. If you have any preference as to which activities are most important, mark these up for the cover teacher, or cross out/delete any that you do not think are suitable.

The cover lessons have been written assuming that the cover/supply teacher is not a science specialist. No practical work has been included, but activities such as display work or poster making have been included where appropriate.

The Teacher's Guide has been put down as part of the list of resources for every lesson. This is so that cover teachers have a set of answers available so they can help pupils even if they are not subject specialists. They may also wish to refer to the Background Information for the Unit, which is available in the Teacher's Guide.

The work provided does not involve pupils copying from the textbook, although they are occasionally asked to copy and label a diagram. It has sometimes been necessary to specify worksheets for a higher level, to ensure that enough work has been set. If this is the case, then the harder sheets are used in the lesson when pupils have the opportunity to discuss their work with each other or with the cover teacher. Homework sheets are at the right level for the route being followed.

There is a space at the end of the notes for you to fill in the day/date that homework should be returned, so that the cover teacher can tell the class.
